With A Little Bit Of Luck

These days when I’m sitting in class my mind mostly just wanders around the clouds until the class ends. I mean the last thing I remember learning in class was that the world is in fact NOT flat! At any rate this week I had the surprising opportunity to do something “fun” in class. We were asked to write a short 250-word statement on a quote from the movie Bruce Almighty. The point of the exercise was to practice conferencing with a student and although the actual intent of the assignment didn’t really intrigue me any what did was analyzing the quote. I am a huge movie buff and within that I love intriguing movie quotes so it kind of got me thinking wouldn’t that be an interesting theme to run with in my blog ( I’ll be honest I’ve been coming up empty with topics in recent weeks, attribute that to writer’s block!) And by the way, if there is a movie quote you really love send it my way and maybe it’ll make it in here next time around!

From Bruce Almighty:
God: “Parting your soup is not a miracle, Bruce. It’s a magic trick. A single mom who’s working two jobs and still finds time to take her son to soccer practice, that’s a miracle. A teenage who says “no” to drugs and “yes” to an education, that’s a miracle. People want me to do everything for them. What they don’t realize is they have the power. You want to see a miracle, son? Be the miracle.”

This quote is one that resonates with me because of the message of self-empowerment it promotes. The character of God is telling Bruce that it doesn’t take a miracle to do things he needs to do but it takes the human spirit and drive. The examples he presents of miracles show where a person made the choice to make the time for a child or choose between right and wrong.

So often in life whenever we sit in hard times we always call for a miracle, just like Bruce does in the movie, but our epiphany finally arises when we figure out that the change we want to see was inside of us all along. We control our destinies and only we have the power to change things. Sure, some things lie out of our control and for the things you cannot control why worry but there is so much in our lives including our disposition towards life that we do control.

To truly be happy in life and achieve all you want to achieve you must come to the realization of being self-sufficient but this isn’t to say that we shouldn’t rely on people from time to time because they’re part of who we are just the same. Often times its people in our lives that help us make the changes we so desperately need to make.

Now don’t get me wrong sometimes a little bit of luck is just what you need. Without a doubt, we all are wishing for that little dash of luck to come our way. Nevertheless, we just have to remember that no amount of luck or miracles make our lives, it’s OUR decisions and choices that animate our lives.

In the end, it’s kind of a balancing act, as people we need to realize that our happiness is in our control for the most part but asking for a little help every now and again isn’t such a bad thing either.
